Car Maintenance Basics

Regular maintenance is the key to a long-lasting, reliable vehicle. Understanding basic maintenance tasks helps you keep your car in optimal condition and avoid costly repairs.

Oil and Filter Changes

Engine oil lubricates, cools, and cleans internal components. Over time, oil degrades and loses effectiveness. Regular oil changes—typically every 5,000-10,000 kilometers depending on oil type—are essential. Always replace the oil filter with each change. Check oil level monthly using the dipstick and top up if needed with the correct specification oil for your vehicle.

Tire Care and Rotation

Tires are your only contact with the road. Check pressure monthly—underinflated tires reduce fuel economy, handling, and tire life. Look for uneven wear patterns that may indicate alignment issues. Rotate tires every 8,000-12,000 kilometers to ensure even wear. Replace tires when tread depth reaches 1.6mm or signs of damage appear. Always include the spare tire in your inspections.

Brake System Maintenance

Brakes are critical for safety. Listen for squealing or grinding sounds that indicate worn pads. Have brake fluid checked and replaced according to manufacturer recommendations—typically every two years. Inspect brake pads and rotors regularly. Address any changes in braking performance immediately. Remember that brake components wear differently based on driving style and conditions.

Fluid Checks and Changes

Your vehicle relies on multiple fluids: coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Check levels regularly and top up as needed. Each fluid has specific replacement intervals—consult your owner's manual. Using incorrect fluids can damage systems, so always verify specifications before adding any fluid.

Battery Maintenance

Modern batteries require minimal maintenance but still need attention. Check terminals for corrosion and clean if necessary. Ensure the battery is securely mounted. Most batteries last 3-5 years—have yours tested annually after the third year. Watch for slow cranking or electrical issues that may indicate a failing battery.

Air Filter Replacement

Engine and cabin air filters trap dirt and debris. A clogged engine air filter reduces performance and fuel economy. Cabin filters affect air quality inside the vehicle. Replace both according to manufacturer recommendations or more frequently in dusty conditions. Visual inspection can help determine if early replacement is needed.
